Sherrie (surname unknown) is a fictional character who appears in Scream 4 (2011 film). In the opening scene of the film, she appears in the Scream universe opening scene of Stab 6 (2009 fictional film), the sixth installment of the slasher franchise, Stab, no longer based on true events after the original trilogy.

She also appears in archive footage as the opening of Stab 7 in a fake-out (in the way that it is a fake-out for audiences watching Scream 4) which establishes the previous six Stab films as fiction and a movie franchise. Kristen Bell's Chloe character enjoys her death scene, while Anna Paquin's Rachel character dislikes it.

She is portrayed by actress Lucy Hale in both real-life and the Scream universe. In the opening scene of Stab 6, she is the second victim of one of the two Facebook Ghostface killers that are the main villains of the movie-within-a-movie.

Opening scene of Stab 6 (2009 fictional film)

S4-Opening-3

Sherrie receives a call.

Sherrie and her friend, Trudie get ready to watch a scary movie in the opening of Stab 6 (approx. 2008–2009 release). Sherrie has suggested Saw IV (2007) for the friendship pairing to watch. Trudie rejects this, saying she hates the movie due to having "no character development" and its torture porn nature.

However, Sherrie thinks contrarily. She defends the Saw franchise by saying that Jigsaw is a creative killer. Trudie then reveals to her friend she has a Facebook stalker, who she types to on her Sidekick phone. She thinks he is hot; upon showing Sherrie. Sherrie informs her naive friend, "that's Channing Tatum... from his Abercrombie days."

Then, Trudie and Sherrie get phone calls from Ghostface. Trudie panics. When Ghostface calls them, Sherrie picks it up and after he says he will kill her, Trudie asks who it is. Sherrie then gives the phone to Trudie, saying it is for her, to which Trudie then hangs up. Trudie asks Sherrie if the door is locked and goes to see if it is.

The phone rings again, but they don't answer.

Ghostface then sends Trudie a text message about that they should open the door. Trudie starts to panic but a fearless Sherrie opens the door and realizes no one is there.

S4-Opening-18

Sherrie's throat is slashed.

Trudie gets a text message that Ghostface is right beside her. Suddenly, Ghostface appears and stabs Trudie in the chest, almost immediately killing her. Sherrie watches in shock and attempts to flee, only to be murdered by another Ghostface at the front door.

Meta universe revelation in opening of Scream 4 (2011)

The audience discovers the characters are actually a part of the Stab sequel, Stab 6. Four more Stab films have been made since Stab 2 (1999) and they are similar to/parody the back-to-back releases of the Saw franchise.

Stab 7 (2010 fictional film)

The deaths of Sherrie and Trudie are viewed by Rachel (played by Anna Paquin) and Chloe (played by Kristen Bell). It initially appears to be our world, where Scream (1996 film) is a fictional film, but it turns out to be set in the "real world" of the Scream universe, which establishes Sidney Prescott as the real person, and Tori Spelling as the actress who plays her.

Thus, the scene is actually from Stab 7, which is set in the "Real World". As a "real-world" installment of the Stab films, it establishes the previous six films as fictional. Chloe (portrayed by Kristen Bell) appears to be a Stab fanatic killer (foreshadowing the later Stab fanatic real-life killer, Charlie Walker).

The sequence appears to be a reference to the 1994 meta-horror seventh Nightmare on Elm Street film, titled Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994 film). In the film, Heather Langenkamp plays a fictional version of herself, an actress who portrayed Nancy Thompson "in the real world", and must now reprise the role, following her apparent death in the third film, as the horrors of Freddy Kruger become a meta real-world reality.

Second meta revelation in opening of Scream 4 (2011)

Jenny and Marnie are seen watching the movie. Kirby, Charlie and Trevor later watch Trudie and Sherrie's opening scene in Stab 6 at Kirby's after-party, situated at her residence, 329 Whispering Lane.

Quotes

  • "The more impatient version of the person you just spoke to." -Answering Ghostface.
  • "Eat me!" - to Ghostface.
  • "Well, I like Jigsaw. I think he kills people very creatively." - Referring to the Saw franchise.
  • "It could be anyone we know. Lisa, Bailey, Wayne. Or the hopeful long shot, Channing Tatum."
  • It's for you..." - To Trudie.
  • "There's nobody out here." - To Trudie

Behind the Scenes

  • She is the first person seen in Scream 4 (2011).
  • Her role was written after two rejected opening sequence: Kevin Williamson's original envisioned opening sequence featured Sidney Prescott attacked by Ghostface, which he described as a 15-minute stabbing brawl to the death. This would have been followed by a two-three year time skip which was rejected.
    • However, Bob Weinstein expressed concerns for how this would affect the film's pacing.
    • As a result, a large 15-minute sequence featuring Kristen Stewart as the first victim, in Casey Becker/Drew Barrymore style was planned (presumably a character like Jenny Randall or Marnie Cooper).
    • However, Stewart expressed skepticism about being apart of a scene that could live up to the original scene with Drew Barrymore, so the plan was scrapped. This led to the meta larger sequence of six female characters (and two true victims), as confirmed by Kristen Stewart herself in a 2022 interview.
  • The script describes her as "A young girl of 17. Sweet. Innocent in that scrubbed clean way. Looks like a virgin. Probably not."
  • It was believed that the description of Jenny (listed as Patty for the description) was for Sherrie. This was proven false after the film was released.

Trivia

  • She heavily references Casey Becker from the original Scream with several gestures made in her role.
  • Sherrie names various people to Trudie when someone rang their door in Stab 6, after getting a text by the killer to open the door, as she assures her it's someone that they know, "Lisa, Bailey, Wayne. Or the hopeful long shot, Channing Tatum".
    • The middle two names would become the basis of the name for NYPD Detective Wayne Bailey as the tenth revealed Ghostface (seventh male) killer, in Scream VI.
  • Sherrie's death, while being a brunette, in her yellow shirt, would be reinterpreted by Laura Crane's actual murder in Scream VI, while wearing a yellow dress instead (who was blonde).
  • Sherrie's actress being Lucy Hale, known for her role as Aria Montgomery [1] in the CW show Pretty Little Liars, with the latter show being referenced during Season 1 of the TV series.
    • During the episode "Aftermath", by Noah Foster when referencing horror media and television at the time (due to Scream's first season and it's events being set in September-October 2015, during the time of which PLL's Season 6 was airing).
    • Unstated whether this means the in-universe Lucy Hale or the show exists within both the films and TV, but are separate, regardless of continuity.
  • Sherrie's character name would be later referenced by Sherry Elliot, as a character and mother to Marcus Elliot, during Season 3.
  • Sherrie as a horror fan, proposing to watch Saw IV, makes her one of various within the franchise, preceded by Randy Meeks as the original expert in the Scream trilogy, and by Kirby Reed, Olivia Morris, and Robbie Mercer in the fourth film, and later by Randy's niece, Mindy Meeks-Martin in the fifth film.
    • Within Stab characters, she would possibly be the second out of three known horror fans, preceded by Randy Meeks (Stab), and succeeded by Chloe as the killer in Stab 7.
    • She also shared this trait with the Ghostface killers within the Scream films, especially Charlie Walker, who was a fan of Stab 6-7, from the fourth film.
  • Sherrie is, if counting her death within Stab 6, the second out of others within the film and the in-universe Stab killing spree of said film, and along Trudie, the only victims to die and have took place in the mid-2000s (parody of the horror remake trend famous in early-late 2000s), approx. in 2008-2009.
    • Her birthday supposedly being in 1991-1992, would make her be born the same year as Laura Crane from the sixth film, as well as Eddie Hayes from Season 2.
  • Within what is seen of the in-universe Stab films to the real world Scream franchise, Sherrie would technically be the third out four female victims and of Stab kills seen, starting with:
  • Sherrie's (and Trudie's) Ghostface killers being and targeting and stalking them all on while using Facebook, would foreshadow to the reveal of the 2011 Woodsboro Remake killer, Jill Roberts, and her reveal within the fourth film, as well as meta-commentary on the next Ghostface killers from the fifth film, Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman, as the eighth and ninth, who'd become accomplices and plan on Reddit to target their victims in the 2022 Legacy Murders.
    • This is later more honored with one of the Ghostface killers of Stab 7, Chloe, making a reference of the events of the sixth Stab not making sense after her friend, Rachel, points out and calls it stupid for the use of Ghostface killers on Facebook, saying "I guess know it would be Twitter, that'd make more sense", before soon killing her.
  • If counting Sherrie and the other 3 female victims within the Stab films alongside as victims in the Scream franchise and it's films/massacres, she is among female victims (19 in films, 4 in Stab films), the 13th out of 23.
    • She's also the fourth victim to have had her throat slit and the first female victim of this method overall, preceded by Kenny Brown in Scream, Officer Andrews in Scream 2, and John Milton in Scream 3.
    • Overall of general victims in order (if not counting Season 3 victims), Sherrie is the 36th out of a total of 52 victims across all six Scream films, thus far.
      • Her own placement within victims of Stab film kills shown is unknown (due to Stab sequels victims after Stab 3: Hollywood Horror being fictional, not based on true-crime victims, and unstated how many victims in Stab 4-5, as well as if composite characters were made to be victims within Stab 2, etc.), only being seen as the third female/known Stab victim shown, so far.
  • Sherrie is referenced in the subway scene in Scream VI. In it, a commuter can be seen wearing the same yellow-colored shirt she had, along with the blood stain from her attack in Stab 6.
