Luther Thompson also known as Hook Man, (formerly SSG Luther Thompson), was a recurring character in the third season of the television series, Scream. A former Vietnam War veteran, Luther would find himself the accidental killer of Deion Elliot on Halloween night, 2010, following the former's twin brother, Marcus, having his candy bag being chucked over in to the fence onto his salvage yard by the latter's bully, Tommy Jenkins.
Due to the Ghostface costume, as well as Luther's war PTSD, this led for Luther to attack "ghosts" that he was seeing, unaware that he had in fact impaled a young Deion through the forehead and caused his ill-fated demise with the costume originally having been worn by Marcus, leading for the twin to assume his late identity's name.
Luther would stumble upon his victim's body six months later in April-May 2011, who would bury him in a makeshift grave in the yard. Unbeknownst to him, the twins' older half-brother, Jamal Elliot, was aware of the truth of the switched identities' between Marcus and Deion, as well as revenge-stricken on avenging his late younger half-brother's death caused by Luther, leading him to commit an anniversary killing spree eight years later, targeting both of them.
Luther would become the fifth victim in the Atlanta Murders, and in the overall Scream franchise, was the twenty-second male victim of Ghostface, overall.
He was portrayed by Tony Todd.

Biography
Early Life

Luther's hook
Luther used to be an elite soldier in the Vietnam War. At one point during his service, Luther dropped from the army due to post-traumatic stress disorder. His years as a veteran were spent at a secluded territory next to a parking lot. No one in Atlanta knew for sure about the circumstances behind Luther's dropping. However, there were insistent rumors about a children murderer named Hook Man, and the possibility that Luther is Hook Man was enough to prevent anyone from getting near his house at night.
Murder of Deion Elliot (2010)
On Halloween night of 2010, Luther encountered the Elliot brothers, Marcus and Deion, who unwittingly entered his turf to retrieve a lost candy. The two children had split up and eventually found the candy, only for Luther to arrive, and stab Deion in the back with his hook, proving the rumors have some base in reality. Following Deion escaping Luther and hiding in a car trunk at the yard, only to die due to blood loss and asphyxiation from being trapped, Luther would deal with the Atlanta Police Department, of who'd interrogate and investigate him for the crime after Marcus escaped to his parents, only for the case to be closed due to the police unable to locate Deion or find Luther guilty (unstated whether the Elliot family pressed charges and took Luther to court for this). Approximately six months later, in April-May 2011, Luther would discover the decomposing corpse of his victim, due to noticing plants and weeds growth in the surrounding cars of and the smell. Luther would then bury Deion in a makeshift grave at the yard, marking the cross with the Ghostface mask Deion had worn when Luther attacked and impaled his forehead with his hook. After this, he would then keep tabs on the case of the Elliot brothers, through collecting newspaper clippings and posting them inside the shed which he resided in.
The Atlanta Murders (2018)
Eight years later, Marcus, accompanied Liv and Amir, sneaked into Luther's turf on Halloween night, in order to find clues about Hook Man and the disastrous night of Deion's death. Luther found Amir Ayoub, who was on the lookout, kidnapped him by dragging him back to the yard, and was about to kill him with the hook, like he did to Deion, eight years ago. Marcus tackled him at the last minute, ready to strike him with his bat. Marcus and his friends confronted him about the incident. Luther's response led to a heated argument, which concluded after Luther showed them Deion's resting place inside a trunk. He pretended he mistook Deion for an intruder due to his Ghostface costume and invoked Marcus' guilt for hating him all these years.
Marcus and his friend left the scene. Luther went back to his business, but being assaulted by Ghostface. Marcus heard Luther's shouting and was warned about Ghostface's presence. Luther and Ghostface clashed with Luther's hook against Ghostface’s knife. Ghostface overpowered him and chained him to the inside of a car compactor. Marcus attempted to help him, but Ghostface had sabotaged the machine so it wouldn’t turn off and Hook Man was crushed to death, as a helpless Marcus could only watch.
Death
Wednesday, October 31st, 2018
In "Endgame", Jamal revealed to Marcus that he was the Ghostface who stabbed and killed Hook Man. Prior to this, some time off-screen while Marcus was mourning by his twin brother's makeshift grave at the shedyard, Luther was stabbed by Jamal as Ghostface, causing him to scream in pain, leading for Marcus to run to locate him. At his own request and in order to make amends and redeem himself for the accidental death of Deion, Luther would fight in a one-to one hook and knife combat with Ghostface, with the latter eventually gaining the upper hand, and off-screen trapping him to his slow death via being crushed by the car compactor, making it so Marcus would attempt to save, only for Jamal to have rigged the machine and not let it stop, thus causing it to crush him to death.

Trivia
- He is responsible for the death of Deion Elliot.
- While he felt no joy doing so, he still let Deion trap himself in the car and die of starvation.
- It was revealed in "The Man Behind the Mask" that upon realizing his mistake, Luther would try desperately to locate the injured Deion to no avail, unaware of the fact that he had hid in a car trunk a died due to the fatal injury Luther did on him; this was due to the subsequent police investigation and interrogation Luther would anticipate, which failed due to Luther stating to Marcus how they weren't going to try that hard to locate Deion.
- His death would make him the first character and first male, to be not only trapped but crushed by a car crusher and be crushed all the way to death and killed off this way in the franchise, similar to how Tatum Riley was the first to be killed and crushed by the garage door in the original Scream, as well as how Jenny Randall was temporarily crushed by her garage door by Ghostface in an homage to Tatum in Scream 4.
- His death by Ghostface would also pay irony to how Hook Man killed his previous victim, Deion, similar to how Ghostface may or may not have intentionally done with other victims in the franchise whose individual deaths pay homage to deaths of past victims as well, even if having no connection, in order to prove their points (example: the events of Scream 2 and Scream 3, which sees characters being killed off like past ones, due to relation to original or to association with killers main target, Sidney Prescott).
- He is one of the few characters who manages to hold his own against Ghostface, due to his military background.
- It was probably his old age that led to him ultimately losing the battle and his eventual demise.
- Hook Man is portrayed by Tony Todd. Ironically, Tony Todd portrays a famous horror icon, the "Candyman", who also uses a hook to kill people.
- Also in the Final Destination franchise (2000-present), Todd portrayed coroner William Bludworth.
- In the second movie of the series, Final Destination 2 (2003), there is a character called "The Man with Hooks" who leads Nora Carpenter (played by Lynda Boyd) to her death after her hair gets stuck in a man's prosthetic hooks and her head gets stuck in the elevator door before eventually being yanked off.
- Also in the Final Destination franchise (2000-present), Todd portrayed coroner William Bludworth.
- He's the first African-American killer in the both the TV series and in the franchise overall, followed by Jamal Elliot, who later killed him.
- The oldest killer potentially in the franchise, of whose victim was also the youngest, although accidental in each's case, ironically.
- In regards to his surname, Luther is the first (male) character in the third season to share the same surname as an athelte, with Canadian-American basketball player, who played for the Lakers and currently Cleveland Cavaliers, Tristan Thompson.
- This is a loose reference to Scream 3 in regards to character being named with the first and last names of Hollywood actors or actresses, albeit in the third season, it's after celebrities.
- He is only the one out of two characters named after athletes in this season, the other being B. Westbrook (like the real life actors who portray the characters, in regards to their athlete namesake and NBA players, all are famous and Black men alike).
- He is one of the many Black characters in the franchise who despite putting up a fight with Ghostface, dies, and is also the fourth out of five Black male characters to die in a brutal fashion.
- The first being Phil Stevens, second Tyson Fox, third being Anthony Perkins, and the fifth being B. Westbrook, with the Black actors portraying them being well known actors, as well as guest stars.
- Hook Man also shares some similarities with Brandon James from Season 1-2 of the TV series in that they were both responsible for the deaths of some people at their hands and whose behavior and actions led and caused for a series and chain of events (unbeknownst to them) to unfold.
- This is also similar to how the death of the first victim of the Scream franchise, aka Maureen Prescott.
- His cause of Deion's death led to the chain reaction that resulted with Jamal's vendetta toward Marcus.
- Said chain reaction also laid the groundwork for Beth's partnership with Jamal, and therefore Luther is the main abs heavy influence of the third season, much like how Brandon James was to Piper Shaw’s (with the final girl’s Emma’s boyfriend Kieran Wilcox being her accomplice) spree against to Emma Duval and whose actions lead into Season 1 and 2.
- Luther’s neglect was also how Jay got to him just like how Maureen’s neglect led to Roman unfolding the events of the film franchise, such as convincing Billy Loomis to kill his and Sidney’s mother and lure his best friend, Stu Macher, as an accomplice.
- The first known character to have a military background
- Being a Vietnam War veteran, he is possibly the oldest male victim in the franchise
- Due to his exact age not being given, Dr. Christopher Stone in Scream VI, is the oldest victim overall, being in his early 60s.
