Group(s) refers to the relationship(s) between individuals as main or minor characters, typically surrounded or based around the primary protagonist. In the Scream franchise, there have been 6 groups (in the films), as well as 2 (3, if counting the Popular Crowd) in the TV series, with a total of 8 groups. If counting the Honorable Groups, which includes the Legacy Trio (Sidney, Gale, and Dewey) from the first four films, as well as the new Core Four in the fifth and sixth films, that brings it up to a total of 10 groups.
The Gang were a group of teenagers and high school (senior) students in the city of Woodsboro, California who attended Woodsboro High School in Scream (1996). The group was the focus of the 1996 Woodsboro Murders, due to Sidney being one of its members. After the murders, Sidney and Randy left Woodsboro and formed a new group at Windsor College in Ohio.
The cast and crew of Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro was a group of two former Ghostface survivors, 5 Hollywood actors and actresses; and both a director and producer during Scream 3. The group was the focus of the 2000 Hollywood Murders (continuity error) occurring while trying to make a fictional film within a film based on the Stab films in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California; also due to the director, Roman, turning out to be the killer to lure his hidden half-sister, Sidney, out of hiding and having been the incentive for the 1996 murders. Despite not being associated, Sidney, as well as Gale, alongside Dewey and LAPD Detective Mark Kincaid, are the only survivors (with the actors portraying Sid, Gale, and Dewey having died).
Jill's group were a group of teenagers and high school senior students in the city of Woodsboro, California who were attending Woodsboro High School in Scream 4. The group was the focus of the 2011 Woodsboro Murders, as their killers were part of the group and wanted to be the new Sidney and Randy. After the murders, Kirby Reed is revealed to be a survivor, becoming the only one of the group to be.
Tara's group was a group of teenagers and high school students in the city of Woodsboro, California attending Woodsboro High School in Scream (2022). The group was the focus of the 2022 Woodsboro Murders, due to their ties or connections to past Ghostface victims. After the murders, the survivors which includes Tara and her friends and the Meeks-Martin twins, Chad and Mindy (children of Martha, niece and nephew of Randy), as well as Tara's protagonist half-sister and main target and her and the twins' protector, Samantha Carpenter, leave Woodsboro after the former graduate high school and who besides Sam, form a new group at university at Blackmore University in New York.
Blackmore Group was a group of university students studying at Blackmore University in New York City, New York in Scream VI. The group was the focus of the 2023 New York Murders due to a personal vendetta against Samantha, as well as her half-sister, Tara, and twins, Chad and Mindy, as the survivors of 2022, who were dealing with the aftermath and many conspiracy theories, with Sam being the main subject of them, facing public scrutiny.
The Legacy Trio was an unofficial and the first honorable group of Ghostface survivors and main targets, mainly Sidney Prescott, of the first four films' massacres. The group met at different ages and various points in their lives, ; while the latter was the newcomer, as Sidney and Dewey were from Woodsboro, and Sidney was best friends with one of the 1996 victims, Tatum Riley, Dewey's younger sister. The group would be grounded following the third massacre, whilst Gale and Dewey would fall in love and get married after surviving the events of the first and second massacres, while having a strained marriage during the fourth, before separating prior to the fifth, who as the adults, acted as brotherly (Dewey) and sisterly (Gale) figures to Sidney. The trio would cease to be following the murder of Dewey, although the group to this day retain their status as a legacy trio.
The Core Four is the official honorable group, succeeding the Legacy Trio, of the new Ghostface targets and main survivors, of the fifth and sixth films' massacres. The group has a personal connection, in that the group compromises of two duos of siblings which include: the Carpenter sisters, which include the eldest and the next generation's primary target, Samantha, who is the illegitimate daughter of the first Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis (Sidney's ex-boyfriend in the first film), and is the half-sister of Tara; the latter being the Meeks-Martin twins, Chad and Mindy, who are the niece/nephew of Randy Meeks (Sidney's friend from the first 2 films' events). Samantha saw her younger half-sister and the twins grow up by babysitting them prior to discovering the truth of her origin, which drove her away from Woodsboro following Sam's graduation in 2015. She would return almost approximately 26 years (continuity error) since her father committed the first Woodsboro Murders, and almost more than a decade since the second Woodsboro Murders were committed in commemoration of the first, to reveal the truth of her origin to her sister and the twins', as well as the first.
Following the third Woodsboro Murders, Samantha would again take on the role of leader of her sister and friends, who she oversaw as if they were also her siblings, by leaving Woodsboro and settling with them in New York after their graduation. The group oversaw each other, such as Tara and the twins supporting and deflecting the conspiracy theories and public scrutiny Sam faced due to her origin, and Sam protecting them from the 2023 murders, whose killers were the vengeful family of Sam's ex-boyfriend, Richie Kirsch, who tried to kill her from the fifth film.
The Popular Crowd were a group of teenagers and high school (junior) students in the city of Lakewood (Louisiana) who attended George Washington High School in Season 1 of the TV series (2015). The group was the focus of the 2015 Lakewood Murders, due to Emma being one of its members and tied to the past due to her mom's survival of the 1994 murders 21 years prior. After the murders, Emma left Lakewood and her 4 friends (5th being her boyfriend and a faux-member) stayed behind as they continued their junior year.
The Lakewood Six (currently Five) are a group of high school junior (later senior) students in the city of Lakewood (Louisiana) who attended George Washington High School in Season 2 of the TV series (2016). The group was the focus of the re-continued 2016 Lakewood Murders following the one last year and were re-initiated 3 months after the last murders in 2015 due to a vendetta against Emma and her 4 friends, with one being killed (Jake) and replaced by another (Stavo), revealed to be a member of the club and Emma's faux boyfriend, Kieran Wilcox. Emma and her new 4 friends were the only survivors; who afterwards and later during the beginning of their senior year, would also survive an unrelated murder spree in Shallow Grove Island in Halloween 2016. Despite not dying during the latter events and being a member's (Audrey) partner, Gina McLane doesn't join the group.
The Deadfast Club were a group of teenagers and high school senior students in the city of Atlanta, Georgia who were attending Weaver High School in Scream: Resurrection (2019: also Season 3 of the TV series). The group was the focus of the 2018 Atlanta Murders, due to Marcus being one of its members and a vendetta against him for revenge (due to his late twins accidental death as kids in Halloween 2010 and stealing his name/identity) and his friends for their hypocrisy. After the murders, Marcus and Liv moved to college in San Diego while Kym enrolled to Georgia Tech (honorable fourth member being Hawkins, despite him never being attacked, due to being a member's partner).
Trivia[]
In each main group of films (excluding the third), there's always an even number of women to men (2: 3 in the first and second film, and 4:2 to in the fifth and sixth films).
This excludes the third film, seeing as there are more men (if counting Cotton's cameo, the director, producer, and Dewey as the technical advisor) than women (if including just the film cast, minus Cotton, is an inverse to the first two films: 3 women to 2 men). In total, there are 3 women and 5 men, equaling 8.
Even with 9, it is the only group in the entire franchise, thus far, to have a bigger group count, due to it being a Hollywood film cast and crew.
The fourth film is excluded seeing as it is the only group in the films that has an equal ratio of female to male members (3:3).
In the official groups of the TV series, like the films, there are different and equal ratios similar to the films.
The current Lakewood Five has an inverse, yet similar ratio to the first two films, seeing as there 3 females to 2 male characters, with more female characters than in the first two films.
The Lakewood Six, prior to Kieran's reveal, from Season 1, has the same ratio of female to male characters from the fourth film and third season (3:3).
If only counting the quartet of Emma, Noah, Audrey, and Brooke, it is equal to the same ratio of members from the Core Four (3:1).
If one were to count Gina McLane into the group following her survival at Shallow Grove Island in Halloween 2016, the group would officially be again the Lakewood Six, albeit with more females than males, and with the same ratio as the fifth and sixth films (4:2).
The Deadfast Club is tied with Jill's group from the fourth film as having an equal ratio between men and women (3:3)
Following the reveal of Beth and the death of two of its members, the remaining ratio of survivors from the disbanded group is the same as the Legacy Trio (2 females: 1 male).
If counting Hawkins as an unofficial member, despite not being attacked but was associated with one of the victims, than the group would equal the same ratio as the four original members of the Lakewood Six, and the Core Four, albeit with a different ratio, being an equal 2:2 .
The Popular Crowd is the only group of the franchise to have 7 members, and the second biggest group with an odd number, following the cast and crew of Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro.
Each group in the franchise has targeted the leading protagonist and their friends, as well as the killers being their half-siblings (minus the first, second, fourth, fifth, or sixth films as well as Season 2).
Sidney Prescott (like the latter three, she didn't know of her half-brother, Roman Bridger's existence, and who was tormented in the first two films by her boyfriend and his vengeful mother as killers; doesn't credit him in the fifth film, due to it being Sam's father, Billy that started her terror)
Emma Duval (reverse of Sidney, seeing as she was tormented and wasn't aware that her half-sister, Piper Shaw, was dating her boyfriend, Kieran Wilcox, who was Piper's accomplice and who tormented her later)
Marcus Elliot (similar to Sidney in that the killer was a half-brother, and a friend; reverse seeing as he is the first male protagonist akin to Sidney, Emma, and Samantha; unlike former two, he does know his half-brother, like the latter and unlike latter, his relationship with him wasn't amendable and led to the events to unfold)
Samantha Carpenter (first in that she is the illegitimate child that isn't an antagonist, nor was neglected, and is thus a reverse to the former 2, minus Marcus, in that she also knows her half-sister and like the tense relationship of the former, she and Tara are close yet distant, but unlike Marcus to Jamal, doesn't end up with the other dying due to events which unfold).
