Before Judy Hicks is murdered, she is seen panicking in her car as she frantically texts Farney that the killer is on the line and she needs a trace. Previous messages shown reveal that Judy gave Farney a "friendly nudge" about needing the paperwork for the Coggeshall arrest, which he replies, "Gave it to Vinson to review 2 weeks ago".

Samantha is later blocked access to the crime scene that became of the Hicks Residence following the death of Judy. Samantha tries to clarify to Farney she "knew her son". She then asks about Wes Hicks. But Farney gives her a melancholy glare and simply says, "I'm sorry".
