“ | Maybe you just can't get past the surface of things. | ” |
–Roman to Sidney while dressed as Ghostface and the KEVLAR bulletproof vest's first appearance since mentioned in the script, Scream 3 |

A bulletproof vest is used by certain characters in the Scream franchise to block potentially fatal gunshots to their bodies.
They are usually made of kevlar, a strong polymer fabric that can also stop knives and fire.
Appearances[]
Films[]
Scream 3[]
Keeping true to Randy's advice that the killer in trilogies is always "superhuman", Sidney Prescott shot at Ghostface six times with a Smith & Wesson Model 40 hammerless revolver, chambered in .38 Special. Ghostface is shot in the chest several times, only to reveal himself to still be alive. Ghostface ducks just in time to avoid a headshot and Sidney throws the useless weapon down, and Ghostface chases after her. Ghostface later corners her in the secret room and pulls open his cloak, revealing a kevlar bulletproof vest, telling her that she can't get past the surface of things. In a deleted scene, he tells her to never walk away from a supposedly-dead psycho, because you may as well give them CPR.
The killer, revealed to be Sidney's unknown half-brother and the director of Stab 3 (and inadvertently, the mentor of Billy Loomis killing his and Sidney's mother, Maureen, due to abandoning and rejecting Roman as well as Maureen cheating on her husband with Billy's father, Hank, which caused for Nancy to abandon hers; thus the cause for the events of the first two films) Roman Bridger, shoots Sidney, but she reveals that she is wearing a bulletproof vest herself. She then stabs Roman in the heart with an ice pick, apparently mortally wounding him. However, he is revealed to be alive and attacks once again before Dewey then takes Kincaid's Smith & Wesson 5906 pistol and shoots Roman many times in the chest after he tries to attack again, only for Sidney to inform him of the vest. Dewey stops shooting, steps forward and promptly shoots Roman in the head, killing him instantly. In real life, the ice pick Sidney stabbed Roman with would have bounced off of his chest due to the vest. Kevlar is not only impervious to bullets, but also fire and knives. Kevlar is designed to be five times tougher than steel so that you would tire yourself out while trying to stab through it and the knife would actually dull as a result. In the film, the ice pick seems to stab Roman, but it obviously didn't as he attempts to kill Sidney once again, perhaps meaning either his vest is made of a different material or she stabbed him in his clavicle just above the vest.
Scream 4[]
“ | Wear the vest, save your chest. | ” |
–Judy after revealing her survival following Jill's death, Scream 4 |
After Judy Hicks is shot in the chest with Jill's Glock 17, she stands up and reveals herself to be alive with the help of a bulletproof vest, saying, "Wear a vest, save your chest!" before fainting, presumably from shock or injury from the impact.
Scream (2022)[]
Whilst attacking Dewey Riley in the hospital, the Ghostface attacking him at the time, Amber Freeman, was shot point blank 3 times and knocked back into a shelf. However, it appears that Amber managed to at some point, after the murder of Judy and Wes Hicks, obtain the former and now sheriff's bulletproof vest from her car after the murders and proceeded to carry on with it as protection. It is in this case, proven as Dewey heads to finish the killer off, unbeknownst to him of the vest underneath (since unlike Roman, Amber didn't reveal herself and her vest wasn't exposed; also due to Sidney not being there to warn him) and due to an incoming call from his ex-wife, Gale Weathers, that distracts him that leads to Amber fatally stabbing and killing the legacy character with two knives, which she states to Dewey prior to his brutal demise, that it's "an honor". Dewey's unawareness of the vest and what led to his unfortunate death is perhaps due to the fact that the previous Ghostface killers, Jill and Charlie, didn't use them and who had forgotten almost 21-22 years after killing Roman.
Scream VI[]
“ | Maybe you did hit me. Maybe I'm wounded. Or maybe I'm wearing a bulletproof vest. | ” |
–Quinn as Ghostface to Gale after she shoots her through the closed door, Scream VI |
Due to the reveal of the Ghostface killer being the past Ghostface killer, Richie Kirsch's family, and both the patriarch and mastermind being former NYPD Detective Wayne Bailey, the use of the bulletproof vest is evident during the fight between Quinn Bailey as Ghostface and Gale Weathers while at the latter's penthouse on the Upper West Side in New York City. As Gale locks herself in her bedroom and Ghostface tries to break the door down, Gale unlocks a gun she has held in a digital locker she has inside and shoots at the door five times. The killer then calls Gale on her home phone as the killer taunts her of being injured, before stating of the probability of wearing a bulletproof vest, as Gale angrily states of how that's why she's gonna shoot them in the head (reference to Billy, Nancy, and Roman's deaths) as she shoots the door again and wanders out before being called by the killer, who mocks her for not being the most important of the Legacy Trio, before Gale catches the killer off-guard and who asks to hold as she places the phone on hold and redials the number, as she then hears the other call from behind a door and shoots at it. A fight then ensues between them, resulting in Quinn escaping and Gale being seriously injured, but managing to survive.
